Transcription of the letter from Franz to Paul Lefmann on 17 December 1916:

“Bremen, 17.12.16.

Dear Paul!

It may still be just in time to write you a few lines, otherwise I might come under suspicion of neglecting you. That is by no means the case. We are very often with our thoughts with you; how often I think about whether you will be able to keep your post, if—after the rejection of the peace offer—the fighting breaks out in the most terrible manner. Then it will surely mean: all to arms! May Europe be spared from this carnage. According to today’s reports our enemies do not seem unwilling to examine our proposals. May all come to the realization that peace must soon arrive; those not fighting are being ruined by agitation and malnutrition.

How stands it with your leave? We would be very happy if you suddenly appeared among us—naturally under the condition that your post remains with you; otherwise the days at home would be too dearly bought.

The nearness of Christmas is scarcely to be felt, a real Christmas spirit is entirely lacking. How can one look forward to the festival when every opportunity for giving has been taken away? All that once made the Christmas table so desirable is now at such fabulously high prices that one must do without. For a little piece of marzipan I lately paid 1.50 marks. Today I inquired about the price of eel—ten marks the pound. If prices continue to rise, there will be nothing left for us but bread and potatoes—still enough at least not to starve.

Through my wide circle of acquaintances I still manage now and then to procure something. What joy, when I bring home half a pound of butter!

Yesterday I saw Erni True for the first time as a soldier. His grandfather, old Lemke, told me that Erni is equal to every hardship; he never complains. Who would have thought that of the little fellow! The captain of the youth corps had given him the very best report. In mid-January the unit (including Hans Jäger) will come to Lokstedt.

Dear Paul! Should you not come, then I wish you a pleasant Christmas festival.

With heartfelt greetings

Your Father.”
